Mike Tyson and Donald Trump have a pretty solid relationship, but the boxing legend will not be appearing at the Republican National Convention in July.
The business mogul is the one, who made the big announcement on social media this week. Trump, who is behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the polls, is hoping to take his campaign to the next level in the upcoming weeks with a strong showing at the convention.
Trump is reportedly hoping to bring some big names from the entertainment world to the event. The Republican candidate’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, opened up about the selection process in a radio interview on Wednesday. The businesswoman shared:
“It’s gonna be a great combination of our great politicians, but also great American businessmen and women and leaders across industry and leaders across really all the sectors, from athletes to coaches and everything in between.”
A statement like this one had the media running with names like Beach Boys, Journey, Rick Springfield, Bret Michaels, Band Perry, and Tyson. The idea of having the former boxer at the convention was not well received because of his troubled history with women. This forced Trump to deny the whole thing on Twitter, he wrote:
“Iron Mike Tyson was not asked to speak at the Convention though I’m sure he would do a good job if he was. The media makes everything up!”
Some say that the Trump campaign was just trying to see how people might react to the name Tyson, and it was a big trial balloon. After the backlash, they opted to go in a less controversial direction. The author of “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth” has not addressed the confusion about his participation at the RNC convention.
Tyson endorsed Trump for president in October 2015, telling HuffPost Live’s Alex Miranda:
“He should be president of the United States.”
