Super slugger Barry Bonds is in the news again but not for his skills but for the controversy regarding allegedly lying to a grand jury regarding his use of steroids in the year 2003.
He’ll be in court to face the charges as the trial had begun on March 21st and there are speculations that the verdict will come in on April 8th during the Giants’ home opener.
The embarrassing issue of “testicular atrophy” may come up in the testimony as Bonds’ former mistress a former Playboy model Kimberly Bell said yesterday that Bonds’ testicles had become smaller as a side effect of his alleged steroid use.
This case is more about whether Bonds lied to a grand jury about the use of steroids that was convened in 2003. The grand jury was investigating a steroids conspiracy case that was against a Northern California company called BALCO that supplied medical supplements.
Bonds was told during the grand jury that he must tell the truth in regards to the case and that anything he said couldn’t be used against him as long as he told the truth about whether he’d been using enhancement drugs supplied by his trainer Greg Anderson. Bonds testified that he hadn’t.
Anderson later plead guilty in 2005 to the crimes. Then prosecutors went after Bonds in 2007 based on his testimony. Anderson has now been sent back to the slammer for refusing to cooperate with prosecutors. Bonds may beat the rap but if he doesn’t it’s not expected that he’ll do any jail time.
