Obamas Not Invited to Royal Wedding

1,900 invitations to the wedding of Prince William and fiancée Kate Middleton have been put in the mail. Not on the list: President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

The U.S. head of state will not attend the nuptials in April.

What is the reason behind the apparent snubbing of our President and First Lady? Victoria Arbiter, an expert on the royal family, revealed that, since Prince William is only second in line to the throne, his wedding is not an official state occasion. As such, it is not required that foreign heads of state attend the event.

Chris Wragge, co-anchor of “The Early Show” asked Arbiter about the criteria behind getting invited to such an extravagant event.

Wragge countered Arbiter by pointing out that some heads of state have been invited. Previously, Nancy Reagan attended the wedding of Princess Diana, Prince William’s mother.

Hillary Clinton even attended Princess Diana’s funeral. Subsequently, since first ladies have represented the U.S. in the past, where was Michelle Obama’s invite?

Arbiter did, however, state, “But the Obamas do have something wonderful to look forward to. The queen has personally invited them to Buckingham Palace for their very first European state visit in May. So, that will be really great quality time with the royal family.”
