Fantasia Barrino In Mahalia Jackson Movie

Singer and actress Fantasia Barrino is attempting to land back on her feet after a tumultuous series of events occurred during the fall of last year.

It was recently announced that Barrino, the former winner of the reality TV show “American Idol”, was set to play the role of Mahalia Jackson in an on-screen adaption of a book that was written about the singer’s life.

The Hollywood Reporter recently broke the news about Barrino’s return to the big screen, and said that the movie will revolve around Jackson’s life, and the journey she undertook to get out of her poverty-stricken life in New Orleans to becoming a gospel singer superstar who was a major supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The singer was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and passed away in 1972. She was 60-years old at the time of her death.

This is an excellent return for Barrino, who overdosed last fall, and admitted that it had not been an accident. “I didn’t have any fight in me. I didn’t care about anything. I just wanted out,” Barrino told an interviewer at the time.

  1. In my honest opinion, I have nothing against Fantasia. She is very talented and showed millions she can over come challenges. I have a bitter taste in my mouth because I don’t believe she is ready for this role to play Mahalia Jackson.

Such a powerful name, Mahalia Jackson…the world’s greatest gospel singer. Sung gospel all her life and the first gospel singer to perform at Carnegie Hall in 1950 a honor in it’s self. Fantasia crosses over from Gospel to R&B music all the time. People that sing Gospel looks as singing as a ministry, to minister to someone that may be going through something. R&B to me, is about absolutely nothing . For someone who carried the torch for gospel music, civil rights I feel I has to be someone more fitting for the role. Not someone who constantly goes from the Church to the world and trade saliva with another R&B star on stage.

I don’t care if it’s acting, but I feel it would be a slap in the face to Mahalia to let someone play her part with such character. I feel this should be someone else in place of Fantasia play such great role. I can see resemblance somewhat as far as face structure but no where close. I will still watch movie in Mahalia’s honor, but no glory to Fantasia.

Just wonder what stunt Fantasia will do next to make me shake my head.

Should have went with Gospel Singer: Lashun Pace Rhodes

  2. This is not anything personal against Fantasia, but she will never be believable in the role of Mahalia Jackson. Mahalia Jackson was a classy lady and was truly spiritual. It was not an act for her. Why not Kim Burrell which would be great in that role.

  3. See? This is why I can’t stand Christi…people.

Who are you to judge people? You make Ms. Jackson out to be a saint but do you really know her life? Things back then were not as open as things now. You don’t really know what either of these women are/were really like. Plus, Fantasia is a performer. Her job is to perform on stage. What you see on stage is not really what is. Or maybe it IS. So what? You don’t have to look at it.

The only people Fantasia should have to worry about are in Ms. Jackson’s family. And if she met their approval to play the role why should it bother YOU?

Give Fantasia a chance. Maybe things will turn around for her, if they need to. But God, if people were as closed minded as you, no one would get anywhere. Judge yourself first before judging others. I can’t be that involved in what Fantasia allegedly does, I have my own life and I mind my own business.

But I am glad she won the role.

  4. For once can we stop being judgmental against God’s children. We all fall and come short but the most important thing is that Fantasia realizes were her mistakes were and are trying and is getting it right. Everyone deserves a second chance, in some cases even when we look at ourselves we see how God has even us chance after chance so why look down on someone else they maybe struggling instead you need to be praying for her that God gives her strength, because it is not easy to be in the light and everybody expect for you to be perfect. The only difference between Fantasia and many others is that her faults are on display for the world to see and judge and the world does there dirt in secret. So who is any better, we are all equal. I am so proud of Fantasia for showing the world that she is an overcomer and it allows for people to see how GREAT God really is in her. If no one else deserves this role I think Fantasia does because of her testimony itself. And that is what Mahalia was about fighting to survive when others were trying to bring her down. Fighting to run the race with God even when things looked bad. If that is not Fantasia than I don’t know what is. Mahalia was not perfect but she strived to follow God and her music is a testimony for that and Fantasia voice is her gift from God. Sometimes it takes someone to be different in order to reach multitude of people. Some people do not want to hear about God but maybe they can be touched in other ways such as R&B which can still lead them to where God is tying to take them. God has people on different paths for a reason but that reason is not for people judging or trying to understand it but for that person.

  5. AMEN……!!!!!!Brownin329 AND ReRe…..NOW YOU SPEAK THE TRUTH

JUDGE AND YOU WILL BE JUDGED! BY THE ALMIGHTY…

PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING AT SOMEONE ELSE’S FAULTS, WHEN THEY HAVE MORE SKELETONS THAN THE LAW ALLOW!

    THANK YOU…

  6. I AM SO HAPPY FOR FANTASIA, NO MATTER WHAT,WE ALL KNOW SHE IS A VERY STRONG BELIEVER IN GOD ALMIGHTY.

  7. I believe that there should be a better representation of the Greatest Gossip Singer ever than Fantasia. What is wrong with Vicki Wayans, so Vicki is not an actress and neither is Fantasia. I really feel that someone who has been true to the world of gossip music should represent the world’s greatest singer.

  8. Congratulations to Fantasia for the opportunity to play the role of Mahalia Jackson just for her to have another chance to utilize the gift that she has been blessed with is great. She is still here!!! She gives her all when performing which is capped off by the Spirit. that impacts the audiance in a soul stirring way. God meets us where we are as we are…Fantasia is very special

  9. FAVOR AINT FAIR!!!!!!!!! I’m happy for Tasia and behind her 100%!!!! They got the RIGHT person for the job!!!! If God wanted the other ladies to play the role of Mahalia Jackson HE WOULD HAVE ALLOWED IT!!!! But, FANTASIA GOT THE PART!!! STOP HATING!!!!! AND CONGRADUATE!!!! She aint “HOLY” enough to ACT as Mahalia Jackson?????…..WHO ARE YOU? How about this you get some money and make a movie and ask VIcki and Kim to play whatever part you want…..and lets see how SAVE they will be after they decline your offer!!!! We love you Tasia!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE??? We all have judgement skills and discernment. Judging is done every single day that’s why we no longer wear plaid pants and knickers as we did in the 70’s. We judged and discerned that we should not do what has been done in the past. When it comes to doing what we KNOW is inappropriate, all of a sudden, we pull out the “WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE ME?” line which is to say ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IS OK…when we know that’s not true. If it were your daughter or your mother doing what we see on these so called “performances” we would be appauled, embarrassed and ashamed. The Bible says “He who is Spiritual judges all things.” This is how we know right from wrong. Quit all this ANYTHING GOES mess before you get what you allow!

  11. THE BIBLE ALSO SAYS, HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN LET HIM CAST THE FIRST STONE. JUDGING OTHERS IS GODS JOB, NOT OURS. YES PEOPLE DO IT EVERYDAY. HOWEVER I DON’T DEFEND WRONG! WRONG IS WRONG!

  12. SO HAPPY FOR FANTASIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE WILL DO TERRIFIC ON THE PART, LETS JUST GO SEE IT…..
(All people fall down in there lives you just got to get yourself back up, put God first and everything will fall into place)

  13. Wow @Meredith in the article February 9, 2011, by Zoe EB stated and we quote, “The singer was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and passed away in 1972. She was 60-years old at the time of her death,” end of quote! So what article we’re you referring to? We are surprised to see the so called christian people responding or commenting with such harsh verbiage! To the first commenter Ellis, this is why it’s called acting not selecting someone who is actually lived like Mahalia Jackson! If others see or view as anything other than what you’re proclaiming then you may need to rethink what you are proclaiming! There are many factors in why the casting agent final selection was Fantasia
