Those who put off filing their taxes till the last minute will be happy to know that the due date has been pushed back until the 18th of April 2011, due to a holiday involving Abraham Lincoln which will take its place.
The IRS has decided to allow the holiday surrounding the former president to the place of the usual due date which requires that all tax-paying Americans turn in their forms promptly.
The “Emancipation Day” will fall on April 16th which will be a Saturday. The official holiday will be observed on the 15th because of the fact that the actual holiday is a weekend.
The holiday was created in order to commemorate President Lincoln’s freeing of over 3,000 slaves from areas all across the District of Columbia on April 16th, 1862, just nine months prior to signing the Emancipation Proclamation which is a very important part of history and a turning point in many ways.
Washington D.C has had the holiday for nearly six years now, but it seems as though the entire U.S will get to enjoy it as well, celebrating in their own way.
The IRS is gearing up to receive a total of around 140 million tax returns from people all over the country, many of which will most likely be filed later than usual due to the new holiday.
