A man from Texas spent 30 years in prison for crimes that he did not commit, which were rape and robbery. His previous conviction was overturned due to the discovery of new DNA evidence.
Cornelius Dupree Jr. was initially sentenced to serve 75 years in jail because he had supposedly committed a robbery and rape in the year of 1979. Dupree who is now 51 says that he is joyous over his recent release and is glad that the truth has finally come out.
Before he was released Dupree had the title of longest-serving inmate in the prison system, but not anymore.
Just one week after Dupree was paroled and set free back into society again, DNA tests proved that he was completely innocent.
Anthony Massingill who was also arrested as an accomplice was also proven to be innocent of all charges. Massingill is still sitting in prison because of a sexual assault charge that is separate from the 31 year old case.
In 1979 the crime the two men were arrested for armed robbery in a Dallas liquor store as well the rape of woman who happened to be in a nearby park at the time.
It’s ashame that an innocent person had to spend over half of his life behind bars behind a crime that he did not commit. I can truly say that him and the other innocent man, were more than likely convicted because of their skin color. It’s ashame, but the saddest part about it is that it’s still happening today.
