John White, a man who was convicted of murdering Daniel Cicciaro Jr., 17-years-old, was released from prison after his sentence was commuted by New York Gov. David Paterson.
The parents of the boy who was killed were not told in advance that John White was being released from jail and when he returned home he wished members of the press who were there to greet him a happy holiday.
White explained over the course of his trial that in an attempt to protect his family from being lynched he was forced to shoot the boy.
Paterson claims that there were different perspectives of justice during the trial and that he realizes the decision will tear open the wounds of those who haven’t even had a chance to heal yet.
Patterson went on to write that the actions he took were out of forgiveness, understanding and principles. The current governor only has one week left until he turns his office over to Andrew Cuomo who will be the new governor of NY.
The Reverend Al Sharpton says that he approved of the governor’s decision and added that it was the right one to make in the interest of justice.
District Attorney Thomas Spota said that the governor should have showed compassion by contacting the family of the murdered boy before releasing White and it seems there are many people in the press who agree with that sentiment.
Every other news service is reporting that a pardon was not granted. His sentence was commuted.
