Nicki Minaj VMA 2010 – On Hip Hop & Gays

Nicki Minaj VMA 2010 – On Hip Hop & Gays – Nicki Minaj, the 25 year old female rapper from Young Money Entertainment could potentially be the first artist to help bridge the gap between gay audiences and hip hop music. Rap has never been all that accepting of gays within their music industry, but Minaj has been able to garner herself a large base of gay fans.

She has not been shy about being bi-curious, and has even made references to liking women in her songs. She has made it a point to empower women in her music, and has won over the hearts of millions of gay rap fans who previously really had no one to cheer for.

During her performance on the MTV Video Music Awards, Nicki Minaj wore a pink and purple spacesuit along with a pink wig. In a world where gay people have been attacked by the very same acts that they are paying to watch, could we potentially see a large gay audience in a Lil’ Wayne show? With Nicki Minaj being one of the biggest names on Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, we most certainly could.

It will be hard for any one person to usher in the acceptance of the gay community inside of rap and hip hop, but Nicki Minaj is definitely moving things in the right direction. Her controversial outfits and looks have attracted an audience that has never been so involved in the hip hop community.

  1. I think that if she is helping people to become more accepting of people it is a good thing. I just hope she is not using this to just get a fan base that is untap.

  4. The problem here is, her music is NOT Hip Hop, and it is an insult to consider it as such.

She is a music artist, what kind of music, maybe an off-brand of Rap music, as there are some of us who grew up in the time when Hip Hop was created know that THIS IS NOT HIP HOP.

Sorry to disappoint any Minaj fans out there…
