French Open Venus and Serena Williams At Nos. 1-2 – The Williams sisters are ecstatic to be number one and two at the French Open, although this is not the first time that Venus and Serena have shared the top two spots. Both of them are the two top seeded women in the tournament at this point, and it has been a while since they were able to accomplish that task during a Grand Slam tournament. It is rare that both sisters are playing at the top of their games at the same time, in a major tournament.
The last time that they were able to reach the top two positions was in January 2003. Many different things have transpired over the course of those years. Both of the sisters have dealt with injury problems and concerns, and breaks from the tour, which haven’t allowed them to play in all that many of the same tournaments. They also had to deal with the death of their half sister, Yetunde Price in 2003 which kept them both off of the court for an extended period of time.
“You know,” Serena said in an interview. “people have said we would never be No. 1 and No. 2 in the world again. You look, I don’t know, 10 years later and.. we’re still doing the best.”
The French Open will begin Sunday. Venus will be facing off against Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, who is a top ten player in the world and will likely give Venus quite a hard time during their match. Serena has one more major trophies (12) over her illustrious career, a number that is only topped by her sister.
