Beyoncé Drops Star Is Born Remake – Russell Crowe has confirmed reports he’s in talks to take on Kris Kristofferson’s role in a remake of Barbra Streisand movie “A Star Is Born,” but Beyoncé is no longer attached to the project.
The odd couple was linked to the leading roles in the remake of the 1976 film, in which has-been rocker Kristofferson fell for aspiring pop star Streisand.
Crowe, who tasted rock star success as the frontman of Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts, admits he’s still interested in making the movie – but doesn’t think Beyoncé is.
He tells entertainment news show Extra, “I think she’s pulled out of it. I’m still chatting about it. It’s one of those stories that’s been made a lot, but I think it’s still quite a big focus – you can see that in terms of the popularity of things like American Idol.”
And Crowe admits he’s an unlikely fan of the TV talent show’s wannabe talent. “I have been known to spend many an hour watching American Idol; it’s a compelling piece of TV.”
“A Star Is Born” is a 1976 rock music film telling the story of a young woman, played by Barbra Streisand who enters show business, and meets and falls in love with an established male star, played by Kris Kristofferson, only to find her career ascending while his goes into decline. It is a remake of two earlier versions – the 1937 version was a drama starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, and the 1954 version was a musical film starring Judy Garland and James Mason. This version was the highest grossing of the three films.
The earlier films had portrayed the behind-the-scenes world of Hollywood film making; however, this version adapted the story to the music business. For example, the 1937 and 1954 films each portrayed the lead female character winning an Academy Award, while the 1976 version depicted the heroine winning a Grammy Award instead.
